Time Crimes threw me for a loop, and Predestination was good yet...problematic.

If you didn't know, Predestination is based on a (even more problematic, but I think slightly more coherent) Heinlein story called All You Zombies

Oh jesus, All You Zombies... Although to be fair I did immediately look at the shenanigans therein and decide 'fuck it, if possible, I would do that'

We studied it at uni and pre-trans realisation me didn't even pick up on it being particularly problematic... partly because it's Heinlein, all his stuff has a pretty high background level of 'err'

Yeah. It was just... Weird to me. The most pre trans weirdness it caused for me was that I immediately thought "I would not want to be the main character because why would they change in that direction" (I was like 10, cut me some slack)

It is up there with Ian M Banks in the subset of stories where 'In The Future you'll be able to casually change sex and it will just be a thing that's normal' which I do like

Like for real, it has to not be a big deal; we really think you couldn’t go to Bones or Crusher and be like “I’m trans” and they give a handbook and schedule you for Tuesday. That’s it.

This is kind of orthogonal to the discussion but I never got why they couldn’t do major surgeries like that while they’re a transporter pattern

I wouldn’t use a transporter for that just because it’s not used as a medical device or operated by a medical professional...

It's Trek canon that living tissue is too complex to safely mess with in energy buffer form Same reason you can't create actual living things with the replicator

It's the same reason you get the wacky transporter accident with the symbiogenesis flower that created Tuvix, because you can't actually control what goes on in there without great difficulty
