I think I heard about a site that actually literally was this "Livestreaming the writing process" (aimed at the fanfic community etc) For unsurprising reasons it did not take offhttps://twitter.com/greatrevivals/status/1261087716566953984 …

what if authors did streams like artists. u just watch my cursor blink on a blank page while i scroll thru twt for 20 minutes until i come back, type 1 sentence, leave again, & return to delete the sentence i just typed. that's it thanks for coming to my steam hope y'all enjoyed

I heard people say this kind of thing is a good way to hold yourself accountable and motivate yourself to write every day, which is the worst idea I've ever heard

Also people really don't want to know how the sausage is made in writing So much of writing is iteration and working through drafts. Details small and large can pop up and then dozens of pages later need to be changed or removed. People don't seem to want to believe that

Every single little idea and reference in a piece of writing needs to be Big and Important and Pay Off, dammit Now imagine that this happens for all the weird tangents your brain goes on while you write, and all the things you want to try but aren't sure you can pull off

I really think the worst thing about getting to peek into the process is the nerdy encyclopedia style fans - speaking as one of them myself

Like, one of the reassuring things you can tell yourself while writing is you can just try out ideas and see if they work and discard them if they don't You can come up with something really stupid or embarrassing or offensive but that's okay if you fix it in the edit

The idea of archeologists coming around afterwards to dig through your drafts folder and mine all that stuff and hold it up for analysis is paralyzing To me it feels like it almost makes it impossible to even start The clamor to see all that and include it as "extras" is awful

Like my sympathy for comedians who tell offensive jokes to at small clubs to "workshop" the set only to go viral over it is limited but they have a point to an extent You can only learn through feedback and experimentation *without* Maximum Consequences for every choice you make

I've seen people talking about the magic of live theatre is being able to perform something for one small audience and then change it or drop it later on if it doesn't work And if everything is online that's much harder to arrange Anything could go viral

Have you heard the Pratchett quote about the satisfaction he took in wiping all his earlier drafts?

No, I have not heard that quote! It sounds very like him though. He rewrote his first book, THE CARPET PEOPLE, for publication, and you can definitely see the toolmarks.
