You can add in here the extra fraughtness of whether you ID as "Taiwanese" or "Chinese", and whether that makes any difference to white people with an axe to grind against the CCP or the PRC (it doesn't)https://twitter.com/euny/status/1261406775951015936 …

It's fun to talk about because, well, first of all it's true But it's also a defensive act In the fact of a white American xenophobia that sees all of "Asia" as a terrifying unified Borg Collective to say "No, look, we're as messy and human as you"

But I've come to grow annoyed over it Like, is any of this really your business, Chuck and Karen Are you really interested in learning about the bloody history between China and Japan - and the West's own complicity in it - or is this another way you get to gawk at foreigners

Like I almost don't want to talk about Taiwan or the Chinese Civil War if it just means white people get to feel like the United States is somehow the good guy in this story or breathe this sigh of relief "Well I'm glad my country didn't go through that"

It is just plain old generic “nationalism.” Just replace “Asians” with “Balkans” or “Europeans”or even “Amurricans”! Whenever I have to deal with this in any form, I just start humming Tom Lehrers classic “National Brotherhood Week.”
