*walks up to a gay couple:* So which one of you dies in every timeline, and which one goes back over and over and over and over and over again trying to save them??

Unfair, unless we are asserting Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are also a gay couple in that one movie/light novel adaptation

I mean it's a common het trope too, like it's the plot of The Butterfly Effect, which LiS explicitly has as an influence

Ultimately the majority of "grounded" time travel stories that are trying to be about character have the protagonist realize that whatever it is they're trying to change in the past, it's not worth it

My go to example bc I think it's the first one I was exposed to is one of my mom's favorite movies,Peggy Sue Got Married, about a woman who gets to relive high school and potentially marry a much cooler guy than her shtty ex but still goes with the shtty ex to not erase their kids

The funniest thing is that this plot device isn't seen very much in real movies and stuff but it's ABSURDLY common in online fanfic, like it's its own genre

I guess it makes sense, it's only in doing fanfic that by nature the whole audience is already emotionally invested in the "original timeline" and has strong opinions about keeping or changing it
