Yeah the term "diegetic" ("storytelling") is annoyingly ambiguous and can be used to mean opposite things But usually you hear it in the world of film to mean things that are literally happening in-universe and "non-diegetic" or "extradiegetic" is things only the audience sees

The simplest use of the term is "diegetic music" meaning music that's actually playing that the characters can hear, not background music

But like, in the Hellsing anime, the characters are obviously speaking Japanese, but they are diegetically speaking English, right?

Oh okay so you're saying that you, the character, are speaking English in your world, but you come from an anime that was written in Japanese, and the English we now hear, though theoretically accurate to what you're really saying in-universe, was invented by a fan translator

I wonder if there's someone in your world you've interacted with many times in your backstory but are never actually seen together with onstage because you're played by the same actor
