Tangent - has anyone got recs for stories where the vampires go to uni instead? It just makes so much more sense if you have to get an immortal education.https://twitter.com/AlexandraErin/status/1260677504639131649 …

There's not actually a better explanation for why Snowpiercer takes place on a train than "the story the author wanted to tell depends on it" but it's still more solid than why all the vampires kept going back to high school.

I mean, if you can keep faking identities, that makes so much more sense! You get novel education, you can pursue your (changing) interests each time, you have way more assumptions about autonomy and agency, and no one comes looking for you if you up and disappear.

Back in high school (we were very bored) a friend and I decided the best age to get turned into a vampire would be about 22-25 - old enough to have freedom, young enough your knees hadn't gone, and you could then pass yourself off comfortably as anywhere from 19 to early 30.

The wacky thing is that the Cullens obviously CAN pass themselves off as adults in their 20s (Because they were played by adults in the movies, although even in the books Bella makes a big thing about how glamorous and mature and beautiful they all look)

"We could be a giant blended family of high schoolers who are dating each other, or we could be a tight-knit group of twentysomething couples." "We're trying to keep a low profile, remember?" "Right. High school siblings in love it is."

The fact that the Cullens call themselves "siblings" and genuinely seem to mean it is really up there on the list of unintentionally creepy things about the story

The fact that Carlisle Cullen has to be their "father" and patriarch and they can't think of any other metaphor to organize their found family around is part of what makes this story so obviously... Mormon

Btw if you accept the whole idea of vampires "siring" each other and making a new family tree when they turn humans into vampires then... Emmett still isn't Rosalie's "brother", because she turned him herself, not Carlisle He's her "son"

Just like Bella is turned by Edward himself in the end so she's his "daughter" (See, this metaphor isn't good and you shouldn't use it)

And the thing is, there's no reason you can't have a family metaphor for *some* characters - if people want to be siblings, or someone wants to adopt a younger vampire. But applying it to all just gets... tangled, to put it politely.

Weirdly for all the other ways Laszlo and Nadja make everything weird in What We Do In The Shadows, they don't lean on this one? They just refer to each other as husband and wife like normal people, never mind that she "sired" him.
