Anyway it's not a very subtle metaphor but if you tried to make it more "realistic" you would destroy the whole point of the story It's a mad story meant to reflect the madness in our world

Right now they're talking about sacrificing human lives just to make the Dow go back up, to make the train go faster, as though that means something as a tradeoff against mass death "RUMBLE RUMBLE RATTLE RATTLE THE ENGINE CAN NEVER DIE"
