I keep thinking about this because it's been really opening my mind to the extent to which people's adaptivity—not merely to change, but to changes that make things WORSE for them—is practically nonexistent I just marvel at the amount of entitlement and privilege this implieshttps://twitter.com/kittynouveau/status/1259906935643672578 …

Like how do you make it to adulthood and not become accustomed to things getting gradually worse for you throughout your life I was in the military for a while and the one certainty was that new restrictions on us were inevitable and old restrictions on us were also inevitable

I'd bet ppl who've done time in prison would say something similar, that their lives towards the end of their sentences somehow felt even more restricted than their lives at the beginning, as new restrictions were implemented in the facilities and old problems remained unresolved

I keep thinking about marching Airmen at one training installation used to be "exempt" from marching, because their training pipeline was a whopping 2yrs long and the post was a nightmare of steep grades and inclines It was a mercy to the airmen there, one they soon got rid of

One day somebody just said "hey, they need more restrictions, let's make their whole lives even more of an unforgiving pain in the ass" and then that was that, they had to march everywhere for two years and I really can't emphasize how much of a quality of life decline that is

why does it feel like some people have never had anything get irrevocably worse for them in their lives they've never had to move into a squalid apartment because their dad left them they've never had to surrender a daily pleasure to some bullshit new guideline foisted on them

Everybody bitching at the ice cream store because they're implementing protective measures How was THIS the straw that broke the candle's back How was the creation of the TSA, and their increasingly invasive—if not potentially health-hazardous—scans not that straw for you

Man the TSA is the picture-perfect epitome of how life just gets worse and nothing ever gets better Here, we're going to violate your bodily autonomy with dangerous radiation from now on but you can opt out with a pat-down Oh lol just kidding now you just have to do both

Replying to @Nymphomachy
I mean they did get rid of the X-rays in favor of M-wave scanners

Patdowns are somewhat more common now but that's because the scanners are less intrusive They can't see into your clothes anymore, they only ding when you don't match the expected outline

Hmm Well it's better that the airports aren't causing as much cancer but otherwise I'm less certain that's more than a lateral mitigation
