Everyone should learn how to read books before they even think about taking a class to write books It's not that that's a better way to become a writer It's that learning to be a reader is MORE IMPORTANT than being a writer

It's not that big a deal if we don't have more writers Lots of successful, happy, decent people aren't writers That's fine It's not fine - for our country, for our culture, for us as a people - if they can't read

"STEAM" as a movement isn't subtle at all about positioning itself as a contrast to "ivory tower" studies Always the emphasis on *skills*, on *product* What can you make, what can you sell, how can you get hired

And, like, it ought to fucking terrify you People going to college with this plan to get a degree in working on political campaigns No, you should just be taking classes on history, and *learning about politics* for its own sake, before you decide you want to work on anything

People wanting to major in "business" and thinking that's better than having a general understanding of "economics" as an ivory tower discipline "I don't want to know about how what I do affects the world, I just want to do it"

Intentionally trying to become more powerful and yet more stupid in equal degrees Professionalization without knowing what it is your profession professes - without ever asking "Why" A society flooring the gas while covering up the windshield and taking its hands off the wheel

A parable for this - I was the Platoon Leader for an engineering company sent to National Training Center to build roads. Part of laying asphalt involved rakes, which the group "cleaned" in open 55-gallon drums of diesel.

You could smell it vaporizing in the 115 degree heat (August 25 miles from Death Valley). Walk up to find a soldier about to light up a smoke right next to it. Frog march them away, start in asking if they have a death wish.

They reply I must be stupid because everyone knows diesel liquid ignition temperature is higher than that of paper and they had a guy demonstrate it by putting a cigarette out in a puddle of diesel.

I didn't have time to explain partial pressure, vapor ignition temperatures, or why the smell should have tipped them off, so I asked them to just make me happy and not smoke within 50 feet of an open can of diesel.

This is why the "gas pedal" in a car is misnamed and is actually the "air pedal"
