A parable for this - I was the Platoon Leader for an engineering company sent to National Training Center to build roads. Part of laying asphalt involved rakes, which the group "cleaned" in open 55-gallon drums of diesel.

Makers need consumers if they plan to base their lives economically on what they make. I don't know, I get that, it's cool, but there are other ways to be a maker that don't get measured by cash generated.
