Makers can't exist without users, writers can't exist without readers, artists can't exist without any audience The pressures of profit drive us towards education as a way to just make kids better at making stuff and not teach them to be thoughtful about what they consume

I still constantly reference DFW, an extremely famous graduate of a creative writing workshop and teacher of such workshops, saying we don't need more of those, we need better literature classes

Everyone should learn how to read books before they even think about taking a class to write books It's not that that's a better way to become a writer It's that learning to be a reader is MORE IMPORTANT than being a writer

It's not that big a deal if we don't have more writers Lots of successful, happy, decent people aren't writers That's fine It's not fine - for our country, for our culture, for us as a people - if they can't read

"STEAM" as a movement isn't subtle at all about positioning itself as a contrast to "ivory tower" studies Always the emphasis on *skills*, on *product* What can you make, what can you sell, how can you get hired

I once had someone come slightly unglued when I said math is one of the liberal arts. Pointing out some colleges award a BA in math didn't help. STEM people can be wound up way too tight.

sciences are also part of the liberal arts, it's like people see "liberal arts" and think it's like liberal leaning artists and won't accept any proof against that because they are Very Smart People With Superior Knowledge And Skills
