"doing something" isn't at all the same thing as "doing work", even if you're producing something by your action.

I think the best argument for it is that, less than being a form of public art, it's a way of developing friendships around a common interest. You read it so that someone reads yours, and that's fun and worthwhile, but not what literature is, exactly.

Which isn't that different from a lot of activities, which are perfectly enjoyable and worthwhile when they're social, but aren't capable of transitioning to being actually for public consumption. Like going to see your friend's band.
