In any case, turns out giving people the choice of whether to do the terrible thing or just walk away is much less impactful than just telling them they're doing the terrible thing and then making them do it

wait, neither game gives you a choice in the bad thing? Spec ops has some sneaky choices but the major bad actions are forced

the end of Spec ops is a 3 way choice between death, death or more mindless murder. theres no real choice in terms of what the ending is supposed to mean about the journey, just a slightly different punctuation mark

its not like dishonored or bioshock where the good and bad endings are fundamentally different and therefore kinda undercut eachothers development

hot take: the Dark Side / Light Side endings of KotOR are both Good Endings

that's because Star Wars, more than most other franchises, puts a lot of effort into making its villains work in a narrative way and also because you are already a villain so you can follow the traditional villain arc or a redemption arc, both of which are well trod

The LS ending of KotOR 1 is more about you (Revan) and your own redemption arc, whereas the DS ending is more about the Jedi Council and the story of how their own tragic hubris fucked them over

Kind of like how the actual prequel trilogy is a lot less satisfying if you really do focus just on Anakin and trying to see things from his POV but is a lot more interesting if it's the story of how Yoda and Obi-Wan failed him

Revenge of the Sith's novel is much better in this regard. making gets an actual motivation!
