The fact that this (along with all the other "good" responses to the set pieces) isn't prompted unless you just try it out is probably the point, I guess

Yeah the reason the situation is so tense is that Walker, in the throes of his madness, for whatever reason simply will not lay his rifle on the ground and put his hands in the air as soon as he sees the rescue team, even though that's what you're supposed to do

You have to let the guy walk up to you and let him physically take the rifle from you

(It's a video game, you can't just drop a weapon on the ground wherever, you can only do it by swapping with another character)

Yeah, I read the "you're supposed to do" to mean, in actual militaries. It's not an option in FPSs, ergo the player doesn't do it, they do what FPSs are geared for - shooting people

A friend of mine was amazed that I found a fourth way to deal with the mob when they hang your team-mate. As far as he was aware Option A: shoot them. Option B: shoot into the air. Option C (for chumps only): let them kill you.

Turns out that due to the melee attack not doing full health in one hit, and due to regeneration, you can actually non-lethally force one of them to run away, and that sends them all away. Just gotta shove him with your rifle.

Yeah I'm not even sure this is really an exploit, it sounds like the kind of thing they might have accounted for

Health regen being a crude way to distinguish between "Is your intention to just keep on shoving this guy or to actually beat him to death"

The point being either action is you using the only tool this interface gives you -- violence -- but deliberately doing so badly

Shooting and missing, and meleeing but not following up quick enough to get a kill, are both *failures* in ordinary FPS gameplay

Yeah, it's definitely intended design, but the player failed by not even considering that a single melee attack would sort it out *and save ammo*.
