I think the reason people have largely been confused by the metaphor about the hero and the villain in The Dark Knight is that it's almost entirely about optics (like most of Nolan's work). It's not REALLY about who's the hero and the villain but about basically propaganda

Like, Harvey Dent before he turned into Two Face, and Batman, are both good, in the movie's worldview. The question of vigilantism versus The Law is not what the metaphor is actually concerned with; rather, it's which is more useful to put out front versus use behind the scenes.
