I think my curse has always been there's a lot of books people generally dislike because they were "shoved down their throats by English teachers" and I happen to usually genuinely really enjoy them

        Did you enjoy Wuthering Heights?

Why? Mr. Sauer prepped us—AP test re: Wuthering Heights. A dear, kind teacher. The book wasn't good. The AP test question—I spoke of Brothers Karamazov. What a relief for those readers!😅 Also, Anna Karenina is not great. He may the first to nail the stream-of-consciousness.

Yeah, like, I actually liked my English teacher a lot and am still friends with him as an adult, BUT the way he was constrained (by his own admission) by school board policies on what the books officially meant meant I hated stuff that was worthwhile

Like, The Great Gatsby was Officially About Why Being Rich and Decadent is Bad and had nothing to do with racism/fascism. He didn't want to teach it that way, but it wasn't up to him.

They don't teach you to understand the book, just recite it for a quiz. I managed to read Slaughterhouse Five in a day.

Highschool English should just be a couple years of Vonnegut. Nice, nice, very nice.

I think that a significant percentage of the public gets turned off of reading fiction altogther by school. They get this idea that all books are as bland as the PTA approved matierial. At my high school, we got to read The Chocolate War. But many people are missing out.

Is it "shoved down their throats" or "taught badly because the actual message of the book was too political and anti-hegemony, and it could more easily be slotted into a facile, simplistic reading"?

That said, Ethan Frome is terrible. I can't believe that's the Wharton they teach in American schools, just because it's short.
