Yeah, people miss this a lot. I do think it's incredibly frustrating that LotF is the go-to for a certain kind of person to talk about "how people really are" but it's absolutely true that Golding didn't WRITE the book to be about that.

That was the point. The island society was just a smaller microcosm of the larger "grown-up" world. The last scene (where the rescuer pointedly asks the boys "What have you been *doing*?") is meant to be a bit hypocritical, the question a mirror held up to the "current" society.
