"Mother" is more formal (and perhaps more reserved); "Mom" is more intimate and affectionate.

But that's English Being Weird, not a definitional difference. As I once explained to my children about "bottom", "butt", and "ass", they all mean the same thing but people are going to react to them very differently. Because English is weird.

It’s the “o” in the middle. Most other English speaking countries spell it “mum”. So “as American as a typo to ‘own-the-brits’ “, is pretty American.
