It always gets me how the concept of a "thieves' guild" is, like, an obvious *joke* about how depraved and lawless a world this is - Cervantes seems to have invented the concept as a satire - but now it's just a default worldbuilding thing everyone acceptshttps://twitter.com/sargoth/status/1259339704253775873 …

In fantasy, whenever there is a thief, there is a thieves' guild. It's a fire/smoke kind of situation

Like if How to Get Away with Murder spawned a whole trope of people actually literally going to law school for a degree specifically in defending people who actually are guilty of murder

what's the best fantasy that doesn't rely on cliches for its world-building?????

There is no such thing. The act of writing in a genre requires some clichés and tropes or it ceases to be part of that genre. There are good ones that subvert some or even many tropes though (GoT, Witcher, Discworld) Here is a post of suggestions:https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/96ng46/most_trope_subversive_book_or_series/ …

I always thought it was basically just a crime syndicate. Guild has more an ironic meaning

In the real world we call this a syndicate.

It did give Pratchett an incredibly funny running gag though.

I think I like Pratchett's version the best because he is aware of how silly it is and leans into it

It kind of makes sense to me, that if you have a thief in a given place they have no reason to work with anyone but a fence, if you have two or three they don't have reason to work together but likely share the same fence, but above that there's risk of stepping on toes.

So if you're looking at a place that has enough people who own the sorts of things people might want to steal, it potentially reaches a point at which some level of cooperation becomes necessary among those seeking to steal from those people. Eventually maybe it gets formalized.
