I think that's very true in many cases but this is a repackaging of some spiritual design elements watered down for western consumption too. Basically, some people have such a low tolerance they can get drunk on even weak drinks.

There's also the anxiety element people have about throwing things out. Using emotional language towards the object helps people with those issue. Almost like, "If you really cared about that person you would tell them to go follow their dream rather than stay with you."
