Because it’s outdoors. Look, this is a virus that can linger on surfaces for days and hang in stagnant air for hours. By that measure every single person in NYC has been exposed to it, yet relatively few have fallen ill. Healthcare workers who are otherwise healthy have died.

What explains this? I am not an expert but viral load seems like a logical candidate. If you get exposed to a lot of the virus in an indoor setting, you are likely to get sick. If you get exposed to minimal amounts of it (I.e via surface transmission or outdoors) you don’t.
