A few days ago @graceelavery tweeted that “part of the point (of Queer & Trans studies) is to handle ideas that the family home renders unthinkable” & that uni students back at home might be "exposed to harm" if their parents knew. American college student here, we we're forced to go home. Homes which fan out across the entire political spectrum. I know people who are facing the exact problem Lavery observed, even if they aren't in a gender studies class.

Only 16% of US University students live on campus. Have landlords evicted the other 84% from their homes? Genuine question.

It's not where they live but where their classes take place, and who can hear while their classes take place.

But the whole point of Lavery's tweet was that 'the family home' would find the ideas of queer theory 'unthinkable' and young people be exposed to harm. This generic 'family home' is at the heart of this debate.

If you feel the need to get really emotional and defensive because you feel the abstract concept of "the family" is under attack from Grace's fairly mild statement that's your own issue (And ironically something you could probably learn about in her classes)
