england has this weird dissonance where they are a) very proud of the Empire and everything about it and b) utterly committed to being Charming Harmless England with no implication in or connection with the long, awful legacy of colonialism

It is worth noting, from a memory studies standpoint, the degree to which "we are a conquered island constantly having to defend our shores" is a construct in English mythology dating back even before the Norman conquest.
