Still thinking about how Soichiro Yagami trades half his remaining lifespan as a fifty something man for the Shinigami Eyes and then dies an hour later

For that matter fate just is weird around all the Death Note users, Light and Miss both trade substantial lifespan but that should have had them dying in their fifties, not their teens

It must be a maximum, right? I can't quite remember, but under "normal" use the shinigami don't wait for that clock to run out before writing names, do they? They just pick off whoever, and gain whatever the remaining lifespan was for themselves.

Notably Misa could see what Light's was, and while I don't think that was every revealed to the reader, if he was fated to die within a year or two I think she would have said something.

If I recall correctly, There was a scene where Misa and Rem explains the numbers are illegible and only shinigami know what they mean. So Misa wouldn't've been able to tell him.

They're legible in the anime, the whole bit with Soichiro wouldn't make sense otherwise

Rechecking the wiki, Soichiro was happy because he could see the numbers at all. The numbers don't show up for other Death Note users, which Light wasn't at the time, and that proved to him that Light wasn't Kira.

Yeah the author said when he first came up with the idea of the Eyes and the lifespan numbers he came up with this whole complex equation for what the numbers meant (it's not just one long number, it's a string of numbers - 9, 25, 14, etc - like coefficients in an equation)

But after he did the one for Light he forgot what they meant and when he had to make them for other characters he gave up on it and just did them at random

Later adaptations also just forget about it and just treat it as a big number that's counting down to zero, based on some unit too small to be days but that doesn't fit neatly if it's hours or minutes or seconds
