      And yeah the horrifying ending of The Wild Shore, the post-apocalyptic one, is the apocalypse only permanently destroyed the US The rest of the world rebuilt long ago but they blame America for the great disaster so they've quarantined it

          There's some ostensible reason for it, a fear of contagion or radiation, but really they just want us to suffer and die in our filth It ends with the protagonist weeping in frustration at a Japanese navy vessel on patrol up and down the coast making sure no one tries their luck
