Like it wouldn't bother me so much if it were the actual anniversary of the movies coming out or an actual date from within the story of the movie but of course it isn't It's some fandom joke someone made at some point that got out of hand

I looked it up and Star Wars fandom, which has existed for more than forty years now, didn't even start celebrating "Star Wars Day" on May 4th until 2011, after people on Facebook started making it into a thing in 2008 Thanks Facebook

I can't help observing that it really took off after 2012, when Disney bought Lucasfilm, which suggests it was popularized through top-down marketing; there's something apropos about a megacorporate marketing ploy overrunning an anti-imperialist protest.https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=%22may%20the%20fourth%22 …

Yeah the first OFFICIAL celebration of "Star Wars Day" was Disney doing it at their theme parks in 2013

You'd think November 17th would work better, since that's Life Day.

note the date: this was not long before Disney took over. There were already leadership changes going on before that. I think it is a big marketing stunt. I celebrate the month (lots of star wars out this month). But all those sales weren't always a thing.
