Why not! I did, and interestingly got one of those "especially" definitions which are almost tailor-made to breed confusion:pic.twitter.com/aR2p21ceiD

If that "especially" clause were dropped altogether so the term CLEARLY meant "mass murder" simpliciter, I'd have no quarrel with the word.

I'm well aware of the definition. I didn't mention it for reasons of brevity, but it's a clear example of the scope creep I object to.

That "scope creep" happened in 1948

fun facts about "genocide": it's an invented word (1944) with both Latin and Greek roots. the "geno" comes from the Greek "genos," meaning a people, a race THAT IS: it has never meant any random mass killing, but the targeted destruction of specific groups and ethnicities

and indeed it has always, from the very start, included attempts to destroy ways of life, eg Australia's policy of stealing Aboriginal children and raising them "white" this is one way of destroying a people

so the idea that these meanings are "scope creep"? truly we see here the dunning-kruger effect in action

He just doesn't really think of a gens (a people) as a real thing that exists that has value and can be destroyed, because he's an idiot (in both the modern and classical sense)
