ME: here's the bad news, young me. You're going to RELATE TO Maul when you're my age YM: How? He has two lines! ME: oh but remember "The Courtship of Princess Leia"? YM: the Star Wars book with the weird gender themes that made me uncomfortable? Y...yes? ME: he's from that planet

ME: so like, that character with two lines who was basically a punchline is going to turn out to be this utterly relatable person who never really had a shot because of expectations about the gender he was assigned at birth. YM: and I'll...relate to that? ME: sadly yes

But seriously, Dave Filoni is so badass he managed to explain *Darth Maul* with "well, his parents were T**Fs" and it works

I mean,if you think about it it is WAY easier to buy that Maul could have been a good person if not for the influence of the dark figures in his life than Anakin.Ani does a genocide at the first excuse, Maul is literally a product of being taught toxic masculinity is all he has

By the time of Clone Wars Maul realizes the way he was taught to be was bullsht but sees no path back from it, so he goes deeper into rage, and yet he's still somehow less of a scumbag than Anakin, who's given endless outs

I mean whenever you see Maul angry about something, chances are something truly horrible is happening to him, even if he did earn it. Like being locked in a Hannibal Lecter cage for Jedi or what not. Meanwhile Anakin gets angry over literally nothing and reacts *worse*

There's also some accidental and yet probably fixable by Filoni gender dynamics surrounding the literal radf*m nature of Maul's parentage, the fact that Palpatine steals the power of the Night Sisters, and Palpatine's ultimate deal according to Rise of Skywalker

Actually wait there's a whole other level of meta hilarity here In the last episode they shoved Maul in, as I mentioned, a Hannibal Lecter type restraint gizmo And his nemesis is Palpatine, who unfortunately through the power of retcon is basically Buffalo Bill

To be fair, it's quite possible to read Palpatine's body snatching agenda as basically implying he's agender. If I take what's on screen as indicative of something besides Abrams being bad at things, he's still male coded and would basically have become a trans guy in Rey's body

Rey's vision of Dark Rey has her dressing pretty femme but who knows
