All those native americans, killed by communism

One problem with this particular debate is that "genocide" simply isn't a meaningful term anymore—and probably never was. Time to retire it.

Care to take some time and explain this idea

The term has been subject to drastic scope creep, with many using it to include such stuff as "teaching classes in English"...

The narrower concept, the one everyone thinks of with horror, is mass murder. I'd rather this were simply called "mass murder"

(If you're going to go and kill a million people, I don't see what moral difference it makes whether they're all the same race or not)

The fucking intention and ideology driving it is important however. Fucking wow, dude. You should feel bad about this tweet.

Intention certainly matters: obviously you should be judged more harshly if the deaths were deliberate, rather than accidental.

But assuming you set out to kill a lot of people, it's hard to see why the heterogeny or otherwise of that group is of any importance.

Setting out to eliminate a culture or identity is fundamentally evil over and above the number of people you kill to achieve it It remains evil even if you have a plan to do so without killing anyone at all ("cultural genocide")

This particular horrific take, for instance The residential schools are a genocide not just because they "taught classes in English" but because they sought to keep Native languages from being spoken at all and to erase their memoryhttps://twitter.com/HenryTarquin/status/1256510384619454464?s=19 …

I don't know how to explain it to you if you don't get it but it wasn't just the number of people who died in the Holocaust who made it an atrocity WWII as a whole killed many times more people, after all It was the explicit attempt to wipe out an ethnicity and religion

Genocide is the attempt to *change the world* so that "X kind of person doesn't exist anymore" It's not just "one motive for murder among many" unless you have a shitty worldview that doesn't think cultures and identities have any value in themselves, which it seems like you do
