My sister is an MD and my husband a Ph.D and when she’s around and the kids get hurt I love to annoy her by saying “No, don’t go to Aunt A, go to Daddy, he’s a Doctor too!” It really pisses her off (btw - he prefers to be called “professor”)

I remember in college that students called professors either “Dr.” or “Prof.” But profsalways referred to each other as “Prof.” I always thought that it was because a few didn’t have doctorates, like the poet or the guy who’d been Ezra Pound’s secretary.

"Professor" is usually considered to be a more elite subset of "Dr" although as you say there are those rare exceptions
