The use of Evangelion for marketing in Japan is baffling, but I am honestly unsure if it is any more baffling than the predominate use of Star Wars villainy and fascist imagery for marketing here.

Something I noticed immediately the first time I watched, but then in the preview for their debut episode Asuka literally referred to them as a ‘cabal’ just so it was even more glaring

I think part of the confusion is that the series itself isn't super clear on where all the religious language comes from But the intention was that it's all made up by SEELE themselves, like the whole thing is they're Christian zealots praying for the Rapture

It might actually be better if "Evangelion" had been translated "Gospel", like the point is it's the Christian idea of the New Covenant only it's a twisted evil thing
