Seeing "Dr. Ford" trending reminds me anew of how much I hate when PhDs who are not medical doctors want to be addressed as "Dr." It undermines authority rather than underscores it. That goes for you, too, Dr. Jill Biden.

Think about pharmacists. They have a PharmD & no one calls them Dr.. Lawyers have a J.D.. No one calls them Dr. either. Food for thought.

JDs and PharmDs are the same kind of thing as an MD It's *physicians* who shouldn't be "doctors" by this argument, because their degree is the one that's a professional, not academic degree and doesn't involve contributing original research to the field

As a PhD 1st & an MD 2nd I don't agree with saying MDs aren't really doctors. The term comes from words meaning higher learning & teaching. MDs usually teach as part of training & all teach patients. Many PhDs never teach but did do research. I'd put PsyD in the Doctor category

I'm fine with saying that a doctorate by rights should make you a "Dr" by definition and that the professional degrees that don't have "Dr" on their name by tradition are unfairly treated (although that's why the lawyers came up with "Esquire")
