The word "doctor" literally means "teacher" in Latin, same root as "doctrine" It means someone who's qualified to tell you what the accepted doctrine in a field of study is and has contributed to that doctrine

Is it a classist and elitist distinction? Obviously But it's also extremely dangerous to just go around acting like qualifications mean nothing and anyone who browses the Internet can be an instant expert

And what's actually worse is acting like MDs really are smarter than everyone else in the world about *everything* Like a practicing MD is just as or more qualified to talk about the virus than a PhD in epidemiology or public health (they are way less qualified)

This is especially funny in the UK as surgeons (having historic roots as barbers) typically take back the title of "mr" or "ms" once they reach consultancy (most senior position), which takes over a decade in training and work at least.

The rejection of the doctor title by some surgeons, once they became eligible for it, is one of the most interesting things I came across while researching the traditional gentlemanly professions.

It's a problem if PhDs are giving medical advice while calling themselves dr. Otherwise, an entirely reasonable marker of expertise.
