What he's manifestly unable to do is quarantine his disagreement on separate issues.

Lol you actually think you're smart because you've "decoupled" the social safety net "issue" and the somehow entirely separate herd immunity "issue" You haven't listened to a goddamn word I've said

I haven't listened to all of it, certainly. You type faster than either of us can think

But I've absorbed enough to see your point and let me concede it (since I already agreed) in this form:

IF we adopt the greater-freedom Swedish model for our COVID-19 response, there will be costs; and the best way to ameliorate these will be...

It's not just that it's "offsetting costs" it's that if you don't have social support the Swedish model doesn't work at all!

Look the WHOLE IDEA of "controlled burn", the ONE THING that makes it different from "Fuck it, just let whatever happens happen", is the idea of separating the old from the young, the high risk groups from the low risk

The whole justification for it, going back to when Robin Hanson posted that stupid blog post that Dominic Cummings latched onto, is this convenient idea that you can cloister the elderly while the young working adults get exposed, and have that be your first and second wave

Hey old guy here, just so you know we are not really depending on y'all to figure this out, we have agency and can take care of ourselves. Just take of your behavior.

Risk group guy here: My own agency isn't the problem. If we open up, the desease spreads to the supermarket, my gf catches it while buying groceries, and I get it from her, there's a probability I'll die. Not much my personal agency helps in preventing that.

No one can fully "take care of themselves" here or this disease wouldn't have gone pandemic But just as importantly, the degree to which any given person can "take care of themselves" and manage their risk depends on their economic means much more than their age

The Swedish model sounds reasonable if most adults of retirement age can choose to live alone and therefore can self-isolate during the pandemic while younger people are working Most American retirees cannot do this, making the Swedish model basically useless
