I just mean that snark and smarm aren't really separate or opposed at all, they always go together Snark is the offensive weapon and smarm the defensive one

Yeah, or idk - maybe something like 'smarm' is what snark calls its targets, like the con-men and their 'marks'.

uwu might be the defensive version, though.

"Uwu culture" is hiding "smarm" (civility norms) behind its own ironic mask to avoid the association with the previous generation of smarmy conservative Karens or whatever

Yeah - it's an interesting pairing of a layer of irony, with a very, very intense rejection of any possible criticism. Smarm seeks to smother critics, snark fires back, while uwu escalates dramatically.

I think of the Community line about "reverse-bullying" a lot in that context.

Ultimately, it comes back to the old-fashioned sense of moral authority coming from being, if not the victim exactly, but at least not the primary aggressor.

I mean yeah at its worst and most toxic, the Discourse is ALWAYS Maximum Snark paired with Maximum Smarm, the two go together That's why the GG 4chan fascist trolls tried to brand themselves as viciously nihilistic but were absurdly defensive of their sacred icons

"D&D SAVED MY LIFE AS A SUICIDAL LONELY TEENAGER AND NOW YOU'RE CALLING ME RACIST AND CALLING ALL MY FRIENDS RACIST HOW DARE YOU" Immediately followed "Oh noes I was doxed and harassed from on top of my big pile of SJW Patreon money cry moar bitch"

It's the principle of maximum retaliation, with the ultimate aim of deterrence I think. Don't engage, because it will be so unpleasant you'll wish you never showed up.
