I think this is a good point: snark vs. smarm doesn't really mean anything in absolute terms, really. Snark is just a style of comedy, which reflects the underlying views of the snarker, which can be anything.

Smarm isn't even really a style itself, because it's not generally aspired to. It's just what you get tagged with if you take anything too seriously - or at least self-seriously.
