I think a lot of the criticism of We Didn't Start the Fire expects it to be this historical rundown of the 20th century when in reality it was always intended to be a catalogue of memories from the highly specific perspective of Billy Joel.

I mean it spends a lot of time in the 50s for the same reason that 'Stand by Me' relegates the remainder of each kid's life to a brief monologue at the end.
