Not to mention that when you're going to be hospitalized for gender affirming surgery and probably other surgeries too, your doctor almost always requires you to stop HRT. If I recall correctly this is because of how it affects *blood clotting* *which is a huge COVID problem*

So the idea of using estradiol as a prophylactic drug in *anyone* specifically in anticipation of them maybe getting COVID seems bizarre. Per WebMD 1-10% of estradiol patients experience heart palpitations and/or deep vein thrombosis.

It feels like there are two assumptions being made here: 1) cis women and cis men differ by a larger amount in COVID resilience than exogenous estradiol increases risk of death by COVID or other means [I'm highly skeptical] >

      2) giving cis men a low dose of estradiol in the short term will cause then to effectively statistically become cis women immediately for purposes of statistical likelihood of beating COVID. This is the part that makes it feel like these are insane FictionMania reading doctors

here we trans women have been, angsting about whether estrogen REALLY makes us more like ourselves, hearing people about at us online that it can't and never will, and suddenly some docs look at a chart and are like "I know! We turn all men into women until the crisis ends"

And people are like, apparently just accepting that, somehow, low dose estrogen patches will statistically even significantly alter the statistical likelihood of survival for a disease because of gender, when gender is already a pretty low factor in terms of COVID risk

(and of course I should throw out that NOTHING indicates treating people with HRT as a COVID prophylactic makes it less likely they will carry and transmit the disease to others)

Also, this is either being planned on a short timescale assuming these male estrogen patients will only be at risk of infection for 2-3 months, which is not how the pandemic is going,or the therapy includes the expectation that these dudes will grow boobs which.. DR. FICTIONMANIA

also it’s the lack of androgens in women is likely the cause for better outcomes for women, so the dudes should be taking spiro and deal with having low T rather than taking estrogen.

I mean spiro is terrible and I suspect if I looked up its side effects there'd be even more reasons to not use it here (I know one immediately, would increase risk of infection by forcing men to use the bathroom more, then increasing the risk of not washing hands, etc)

Well, ironically, it was invented to treat high blood pressure and swelling/fluid buildup from organ failure, which is one of the things the virus causes

That's more or less how it was discussed in a pharmacology class I took in grad school. The focus was on how it lowers blood pressure by acting on the ion channels in the kidneys (which is why people on it crave salt and need to be careful with potassium).

The anti-androgen effects were discussed as an afterthought. Though it did segue into talking about anti-androgen therapy being used to repress male pattern baldness. So, I'm not surprised to see anti-androgens being proposed for COVID, they're already widely available.
