Spielberg is credited with inventing the blockbuster...but Gone With the Wind is still the best selling film of all time, right?

Not sure I understand what exactly a blockbuster is if GWTW doesn't qualify. wikipedia says Jaws buzz and multiple viewings...pretty sure GWTW did too though?

i think it’s cause jaws was the first film to gross over a million dollars at the box office (without inflation, obvs).

no; can't be that. GWTW took in almost 400 million (adjusted it's 3.44 billion.)

Okay, so the term is because jaws is thought of as the first film of the “blockbuster era”. Huge, multi market films that inspire “buzz” and repeat viewings.

Well I mean look Old Hollywood had big blockbuster movies all the damn time, like if Gone with the Wind and The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur aren't "blockbusters" the term is meaningless

The real sort of mixed legacy of Jaws and Star Wasr in the 70s was this specific model of being able to crank out a blockbuster (or a "tentpole feature" or whatever you wanna call it, a "big movie") on demand with a specific playbook

Like the real notable thing about Jaws and Star Wars is they *weren't* based on extremely popular existing properties

Ben Hur, probably the first "blockbuster franchise", worked its way from being a hit novel in fucking 1880 to a hit Broadway play to a hit silent film to the hit talkie we remember with Charlton Heston from 1959 Spielberg is remembered for making Jaws a hit "out of nowhere"

Yeah the mean joke about Jaws for years was that it was a "shark movie" and people were just impatiently waiting for the shark Which is pretty unfair, like the thing is Jaws is honestly a great deal more artistic and complex than most "blockbusters"
