The problem is this contradicts other rights that other people want to hold up as basic human rights, like the absolute freedom to modify your living space any way you want and have control over it Which unfortunately does imply the concept of property rights and ownership

Frankly, if we thought of it as "single payer housing" then you might still have rent-seeking (literally) landlords, just paid by the government, just as single payer won't eliminate private hospitals

Right, the social-democratic concept of a "housing allowance" like people in the US military get, as a subset of UBI It would help a lot of people but it would be pretty far from the utopia people want where "If you live there then it's YOUR HOUSE, PERIOD"
