I don't necessarily agree with everything in this thread but I do feel like the high emotions around housing mean that this is one of the areas where people spit the most fiery takes with the least amount of thought into details and consequenceshttps://twitter.com/BootlegGirl/status/1254645160467709953 …

here's my hot take, and I truly expect to take heat for this, but WHATEVER. My "better things are not significantly possible any time soon, so we need to deal as best we can" stance is well known.

"In a communist utopia, how do you decide when to build houses, where to build them, and then who gets to live in them and for how long" That's actually one of the BIGGEST and HARDEST questions to answer, a lot more so than questions about commodities like food

We have so much food on a daily basis, we throw out huge percentages of it because it spoiled. When's the last time we bulldozed a suburban neighborhood because we had too many houses.

...Houses sitting empty because no one actually wanted to live there -- with a resulting sudden and painful collapse in the construction industry and all its surrounding industries -- was a huge news story after 2009

Obviously the housing market doesn't move as fast on a day-to-day basis as buying bushels of potatoes or wheat but yes, wasted labor on empty houses is a thing Abandoned developments and ghost towns are very much a thing

I briefly lived in a town where the industry had disappeared and the entire community was living largely on government assistance. If everyone had moved somewhere with jobs, there would have been a lot of technically available houses...miles away from jobs.
