ability score discourse is fucking terrible

like hey guys as long as you're quantifying "wisdom", "intelligence" and "charisma" as numerical scores in the first place, the existence of minor bonuses or penalties to those scores isn't gonna be some miracle cure for implicit racism

There's always a fundamental problem with RPing a character whose "mental stats" theoretically provide some limitation on what they're "capable of thinking of"

I don't really know if I entirely agree - you can get some good mileage out of playing characters who are more or less clever - but it's definitely a fraught territory, and tbh I feel like INT, in particular, is a disaster.

Character stats are gameplay abstractions (can you cast this spell) and nothing more.

I mean, that's certainly a take on it that the optimization crowd kinda encouraged. :( I *prefer* more narrative-mechanics synthesis, but... it's hard in D&D.

The problem with stats in narrative is everything we’ve talked out here.

Yeah one random example is how the Friday the 13th game took ENORMOUS flak when they realized they'd unwittingly designed their initial cast of characters so all the Black people had the lowest Intelligence scores

How did they head this off without having to redesign and rebalance everything? They renamed "Intelligence" to "Repair", since the only thing the Intelligence stat actually does in the game is determine how good you are at repairing things

Which also made it more realistic, since there really isn't that much correlation irl between how well you do on an IQ test and how likely you are to be able to start a car with a dead battery

Int in D&D is such a bad stat, really. Like, even calling it Intuition or Education would be an improvement modeling what it actually does.
