Evolution is only even *possible* because there's a certain baseline level of diversity in alleles made possible by ongoing random mutations that stick around for long periods of time

Yeah - there's never a plan, that's the persistent thing. There are lots of possibilities, and some of them somewhat abruptly become advantaged. Although multi-generational structures have pre-human roots, I think.

And some of it is even reversed: being post-reproductive at all is an unusual thing for most animals, so it might have gone in that direction.
