film twitter is really defensive about Stephen Spielberg. It's kind of bizarre. It's like if music twitter went to the mat for Billy Joel, or book twitter got mad if you said Tom Clancy was kind of crap.

Paul Simon and John Irving would be better comparisons.

John Irving is more highbrow than Spielberg, and less commercially successful. Paul Simon maybe...not sure if music twitter would defend him in the same way.... (I like him better than Spielberg probably, but Graceland is kind of terrible.)

A Prayer For Owen Meany is in my top five novels of all time. For the record, I believe you can be both commercially successful and an artist. Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun is brilliant and VERY underrated. Launched Christian Bale who gave an amazing performance at what? 13?

sure; Beyoncé is fantastic. John Irving and Spielberg not so much.

Actually, I think Billy Joel was the right comparison. He's a commercially bland artist who's recorded a bunch of hits and absolutely shreds on his primary instrument.

The substance of the various dunks on Spielberg are equivalent to what Weird Al was saying in "Still Billy Joel to Me"
