This is genuinely kind of upsetting, like everyone trying to pretend they never made fun of Mr Rogers for being twee or for his show being boring and slow It's the reverse of pretending nobody liked Avatar and nobody paid to see it in Imax even once let alone nine timeshttps://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/1254235973807996929 …

Everyone's dunking on this take as if Keanu didn't have a reputation as a terrible actor for decades despite his commercial success. Everyone trying to act like he was respected all along, yeah, yall are liars https://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1253850450492903425 …

I feel like late night sketch comedy needs to be preserved just for its historical value Like drag out an old SNL or MadTV sketch about "casting Keanu Reeves as X" where the whole joke is he can't act and being like "Admit it you saw this and laughed at it in 2005"

Yeah he was pretty universally panned as a bad actor although somewhere around 2,000 he started taking rolls where that was a strength. I'm not sure that a emotive and responsive neo would have worked. And my favorite role by him ever was the bad guy and much to do about nothing

Which worked because he was a flat and stilted actor. It's totally reasonable for someone to learn to act in the middle of their career. I mean I dated girls, I saw every Brad Pitt movie in the '90s. It took me years to watch his good stuff

He was terrible in Dracula. I do have a deep affection for him, though. He’s a genuinely good guy.

its clear the issue was never his acting, Speed and Bill and Ted are great. But the powers that be kept putting him in stuff outside his lane

Kids these days will not understand the absolute befuddlement that most of America felt that Keanu somehow landed roles in both Dracula and Dangerous Liaisons, and talked like a surfer dude through his performances in otherwise pretty credibly good period pieces.

Believe it or not SNL was not the summary of Gen X thought in 2005. The audience skewed older (just like it skews older than 20–somethings now). “Keanu is wooden” was a lame joke, an easy laugh.
