Arthur Chu Retweeted Todd in the Shadows

This is genuinely kind of upsetting, like everyone trying to pretend they never made fun of Mr Rogers for being twee or for his show being boring and slow It's the reverse of pretending nobody liked Avatar and nobody paid to see it in Imax even once let alone nine timeshttps://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/1254235973807996929 …

Everyone's dunking on this take as if Keanu didn't have a reputation as a terrible actor for decades despite his commercial success. Everyone trying to act like he was respected all along, yeah, yall are liars https://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1253850450492903425 …

I feel like late night sketch comedy needs to be preserved just for its historical value Like drag out an old SNL or MadTV sketch about "casting Keanu Reeves as X" where the whole joke is he can't act and being like "Admit it you saw this and laughed at it in 2005"

I never understood that as a thing? Even send ups of goods schtick always struck me as loving tributes to a living saint

It's okay to admit that your opinion changed. It's a normal thing about being human. To use Avatar: it is very impressive visually, and nothing quite like it had come along. Everyone buying into it made sense at the time, and there's no shame in that.

My opinion of him as actor really changed after watching My Own Private Idaho. I feel like a lot of people have only seen him in blockbusters, and those aren't always a great way to gauge an actor's talent.

But who was making fun? I mean, I'm a borderline GenX (1979 baby) but I remember feeling like I had to defend my appreciation for Keanu to my parents' generation. I feel like it was the reviewers who dunked on him, and they were generally older than GenX.

I can't imagine 20 something hipsters in 1992 watching Bram Stoker's Dracula NOT making fun of him!

I remember when the only "Keanu is good, actually" take was that he brought no distinct personality to roles so it was easy for the viewer to project themselves on the character. So it was his weakness as strength. Loved him and his movies, but, yeah.

That was mostly a boomer thing, though. People knew him for movies for which he was miscast more than the ones that made my peer group love him (River’s Edge, Parenthood, Bill and Ted).

Coppola's Dracula is arguably the most Boomer-ish "this is what the kids seem to like these days, so I'll go with it" '90s movie ever. It feels like the sort of thing a 50ish guy would produce after watching 1991-era MTV for a week. All that's missing is Drac shouting "SEGA!!!"

I adored Mr. Rogers even while finding him boring. I found Keanu endearing even while laughing my ass off at him during Dracula. I still like Avatar. 🤷
