Couple of thoughts on that summary. First, I love Red. She's great. She does a great job here too. Second? I love Heinlein. Warts and all. Third? I know I said a couple, I'm not pithy...

This is totally not my favorite Heinlein book. I started reading Heinlein as a little kid, my dad was a fan. So this was one of those books I didn't really 'get' with the adult themes as a kid. I liked The Rolling Stones, and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress much more.

I have revisited this book as an adult, still not my fav. I had better appreciation for it though and having also read Tramp Royale...it was fun to see how much of the book was based on the Heinlein's travels and their interactions with various people...like strippers in NOLA.

All back in the 1950s. Anyhoo. The shit with Duke and Jubal and the um racism, as I recall it...Heinlein was using that conversation to highlight Duke's prejudices and pointing out the Native American part was to illustrate the bigotries, which at this point, are 'of old'

And while his female characters written in this era tend to fall under various stereotypes expected of the era he wrote in, the intelligence and autonomy they demonstrate is common in a lot of speculative fiction/sci-fi of Heinlein and others. So you get a WEIRD dichotomy

of the 'slap and tickle' Mad Men type shit, and women who are almost always better AND more skilled than anyone else around them, AND it's acknowledged. It's a fascinating book though. Also? This book is why waterbeds couldn't be patented. Heinlein describes it in detail.

Heinlein had a huge crush on his wife Ginny and basically started writing all his female characters as caricatures of her after they met (tall redheads who are both hypersexual and hypercompetent)

Yes. Also being a redhead that appealed to me as a kid. :)
