Like I'm not one to go to bat for the administration of my old high school but *the way the guy himself told the story* that's what happened The principal was doing the man-to-man talk thing, "Look son you got in a physical altercation with a teacher in front of witnesses"

"It's really not a good situation, what do you expect me to do" "Do? What, are you gonna expel me?" "I mean, according to the rules yeah that's what I have to do" "Oh come on, I'd like to see that"

And like this conversation KEPT ON GOING "I mean okay, I can start the process to expel you right now if that's what you want" "Go ahead, fine, let everyone know you're expelling a senior just before graduation over this bullshit" "I will!"

Like he talked about it as though he were full of contempt for the principal being such a pussy and yet surprise and anger that this did in fact end up with him being expelled When the principal was clearly like begging him to just offer to apologize or something

"Show backbone" and all that - sometimes, maybe even usually, they successfully find a polite way to back down and save face. But then other times, World War I.

It often depends how much the politicians are calling the diplomats a bunch of pussies for trying to calm things down (Wilhelm II liked the expression 'filled their pants' whenever someone wasn't pro-war enough)

Von Clausewitz's quote "War is diplomacy continued by other means" is actually half of a double quote, where he also said "war is a fight continued by other means" (the word "fight" here in German connoting a fistfight or slapfight)

I.e. war is both things, it can be a rational move in a Realpolitik negotiation and it can also be people working out a childish personal beef using other people's lives

Yeah - Clausewitz was notably a military theorist, too. The message is almost always the same from the legendary military figures: don't fight wars you're not sure you'll win.

When Germany was winning wars in the 19th century, it wasn't because they were going off on a hair trigger. They pursued diplomacy, unless war was a better option. National interest is never served by 'backbone'
