There's some irony here that this litany of food poisoning scandals is the direct result of this cultural obsession is "freshness", like this is literally why their competitors ship their ingredients frozenhttps://twitter.com/ajplus/status/1252768617189371905 …

Chipotle will pay a record $25 million in fines for serving tainted food that left 1,100 people sick — the largest food safety fine ever paid in the U.S. The company has admitted to poor safety practices, and will avoid conviction by starting a better food handling program. pic.twitter.com/rkAdlwc41y

It's a really funny thing about the age we live in that we think the worst thing that can happen to food is being adulterated in order to preserve it - frozen, canned, had added preservatives, etc - when all that stuff was invented because food actually going bad is way way worse

All the gushing about Chipotle back in the day about how they proved you don't need to rely on freezing and processing with a little extra work Well it turned out to be a LOT of extra work and they had multiple cases of big labor disputes AND food poisoning so hey

Kinda seems like in the long run what they actually proved was that the McDonald's model (shipping packaged, frozen ingredients with an "idiot-proof" prep procedure) existed for a reason

I dunno, it's not that I like traditional factory-like fast food - in fact I agree it's a major social ill that's probably helping to kill us all - but the faux-green "best of both worlds" marketing from Chipotle always annoyed me

Yeah big surprise it was because you were working everyone behind the scenes like scurrying hamsters in a giant rickety Rube Goldberg machine that fucked up all the time and kept giving people E. coli

the best way to eat fresh food is by supporting local small produce farms that don't ship all the way across the continent, but America isn't ready for that conversation yet

I mean, yeah, because that's pretty expensive and you can't get a lot of the things you want

My favorite thing about this is when professional chefs on TV cooking shows look so morbidly disgusted when they have to work with anything canned, frozen, dried, etc. as an ingredient. Yes, people eat like that, and we are fine.

Literally thousands of years of history of people figuring out ways to store ice in yet smaller spaces to preserve food in it, until someone finally figured out refrigeration.
