"Horseshoe theory" isn't really the right word for this, there needs to be a word for this kind of galaxy brain reversal, this ideology of "Only Mayor Quimby would release a madman like Sideshow Bob, vote Sideshow Bob" https://twitter.com/ibflorea/status/1253022841735393284 …

There's something specifically Christian about it, this interest in redemption narratives and whatnot over just straightforwardly judging people by the consequences of their actions

I hate to bring this up but this is totally a thing about how people judge characters in fiction "Cao Cao is a horrific tyrant but he was kind one time to Guan Yu, Guan Yu was a loyal warrior for the Shu Han but he faltered and stayed his hand one time against Cao Cao"

"Therefore Cao Cao is a true misunderstood hero and Guan Yu is an overrated failure, vote Cao Cao" (There, I referenced a fancy book from hundreds of years ago so you can't call me a shitlib for making the analogy)

I'm not even sure it's that. It smacks of the "well they got the trains running on time" canard about the fascists. They think 90% of it is good, if only they could get rid of that last terrible bit! But they certainly can't say that or even really admit it to themselves.
-
And of course, you can't actually separate the parts they yearn for from the rest, that's the whole point.

"He is bad, I expected bad things from him so this is a pleasant surprise. You are good and always were good. But you are not perfect and I expected better from you." Reminds me of rewarding improvement based on %. Jump from 2 to 3 is 10 times bigger than jump from 10 to 12.
-
Because the first is 50% jump, the 2nd is 5% jump in productivity. Btw, I always hated "Prodigal son parrable" for that reason, because I was always the loyal, well behaved one.
